Did you jump up for the rebound on the court and land “funny?” Or maybe you tripped over a stump on your hike? Ankle sprains happen when you least expect it. It may seem like no big deal, but rolling your ankle can stop you from doing what you love.
Common symptoms can range from mild pain, to swelling and loss of motion, however, each sprain is unique. We can help determine how extensive your sprain is and what is the best treatment plan for you. Even if you think your ankle sprain isn’t that bad, it’s important to come visit our Durango, CO podiatrist, so we can make sure you heal properly.
First degree sprains happen when the ligaments have been stretched but not torn. We usually treat with the PRINCE method Protect, Rest, Ice, NSAIDS (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), Compression, and Elevation
Second degree sprains partially tear the ligament. This is the most common type of ankle sprain and can usually be treated with an aircast or brace and physical therapy.
Third degree sprains could possibly require surgery to repair a completely torn ligament. With a third degree sprain, you’ll probably experience severe pain, swelling and lack of motion.
The first step to being pain-free is visiting us so we can diagnose your ankle sprain and give you the best solution to fit your unique needs.
