Children are born flat-footed and their arches usually develop by about age 13. However, some kids continue to have flat feet throughout their lives. Usually, they won’t experience any symptoms but if left untreated, flat feet can change your child’s posture and strain other joints like their knees and hips. If you’re concerned about your child, your foot doctor in Gallup, NM recommends these two simple ways you can tell if your child has flat feet.
Finger Painting For Feet
Have your child step in a little bit of water and stand or walk barefooted across a flat, cemented surface such as a driveway or garage floor. You can look at their footprint and tell if the entire foot was pressed to the ground or the arch was slightly lifted. For younger children, you can make this a game with non-toxic finger paint and some craft paper.
This simple exam can show you if your little one has flexible flat feet. Have them stand and place their hand on a wall. Have them reach up and on their tiptoes – their arches should appear. If not, it’s possible they have flat feet.
