Pointy high heels may compliment the perfect pencil skirt, but they’re to blame for many foot pain issues women experience in Moab, Utah (UT). The more you wear heels, the more likely you are to develop hammertoes, as well as other foot and ankle conditions. Hammertoes develop from a muscle imbalance that prevents the toe from moving. If left untreated, you could require surgery to relieve the pressure on your toes and restore the joint’s movement.
Wearing proper shoes is the first defense against developing hammertoes. If you can’t live without rocking those 4-inch pumps, set your feet free at the end of the day. Moab, UT’s favorite podiatrist, Dr. Hugentobler recommends these simple stretches to take care of your toes:
While standing, place the ball of your foot on somewhat elevated surface (like a book). Bend your front knee slightly and shift your weight forward to stretch your ankle. Repeat several times on each foot.
Top Of The Foot Stretch
While sitting, cross your leg and hold one foot in your hand. Gently pull your toes down to stretch the top of your foot. Hold for 20 seconds then stretch your leg out and point and flex your feet.
After stretching the top of your foot, lace your fingers between your toes and gently massage the tendons. Wiggle your toes and practice scrunching them together like you’re trying to pick something up. Rub the tops and bottoms of your feet in the way that feels best.
While sitting on the ground, stretch your legs out in front of you. Gently reach for your toes and pull them towards you to stretch your leg, feet, and ankle muscles. Moab podiatrists recommend you use a towel or band, if you can not reach your toes. Point and flex your feet as you repeat on both sides.
Take care of your feet and they’ll take care of you. If you’re experiencing pain and discomfort from your shoes, you don’t have to just deal with it. At Animas Foot & Ankle, we’re here for you.
